- 성민우 작가의 주된 관심사는 인간의 시선과 조금 떨어진 곳에 존재하는 흔한 풀들의 삶의 방식이다. 풀에 대한 지속적인 관심과 애정을 바탕으로 생명의 본질을 이해하려 하고 풀과 삶의 관계, 자연과 인간의 관계망에 관한 고민을 작업으로 풀어나가고 있다.
- 자잘한 씨앗들과 거친 풀줄기로 만들어진 부케와 풀의 초상은 위로와 헌사의 의미를 담고있다. 모든 생명체의 삶은 고단하고 지난한 과정을 거치기에 화사한 꽃부케보다 거친 풀부케와 더 많이 닮아있다. 흔한 풀의 씨앗 하나가 겪게 되는 발아와 생장, 번식과 멈춤의 과정은 모든 생명체의 삶과 죽음의 문제를 설명하기에 충분하다.
- 작품세계의 중심을 이루는 오이코스 OIKOS는 인간의 사적 영역, 즉 집을 뜻하는 고대 그리스어로 환경과 생태의 어원이 되는 용어이다. 화면 가득 채워진 흔한 풀들은 하나의 존재이며 동시에 지구환경을 구성하는 시간과 공간을 의미하며 인간이 환경과 맺는 밀접한 관계성을 보여준다.
- 성민우 작가는 홍익대학교 동양화과 및 동 대학원을 졸업하고 한국교원대학교에서 미술교육학 박사를 받았으며. 개인전 25회와 기획전 및 단체전에 200여회 참석했다. 겸재 정선 내일의 작가상(2013)과 금강미술대전 최우수상(2015), 단원미술제 단원미술상(2015)과 광주화루 우수상(2021)을 수상하는등 화단의 주목을 받고 있다.
- Artist Sung Min Woo's primary interest lies in the lifestyle of common grasses, slightly removed from the human gaze. Grounded in a continuous fascination and affection for grass, Sung aims to understand the essence of life. His works unravel contemplations on the relationship between grass and existence, interwoven with the complexities of the human-nature nexus.
- Bouquets crafted from small seeds and rugged grass stems convey messages of solace and tribute. The portrayal of grass offers more resonance with the toil and ruggedness of life processes than with radiant floral arrangements. The journey of germination, growth, reproduction, and stagnation undergone by a humble grass seed aptly delineates the issues of life and death pertinent to all living beings.
- At the heart of his artistic realm lies "OIKOS," a term originating from ancient Greek, signifying the private domain of humans, i.e., home. The profusion of commonplace grasses filling the canvas embodies both individual existence and the time-space constituting the global environment, elucidating the intimate relationship between humans and their surroundings.
- Sung Min Woo graduated from the Department and Graduate School of Oriental Painting at Hongik University, receiving a doctoral degree in Art Education from Korea National University of Education and having participated in 25 solo exhibitions and over 200 curated and group exhibitions. Notably, he has received recognition such as the Tomorrow's Artist Award at the Gyeonggi Jeongseon Art Competition (2013), the Grand Prize at the Geumgang Art Competition (2015), the Danwon Art Award at the Danwon Art Festival (2015), and the Excellence Award at the Gwangju Hwaroo Art Fair (2021), garnering attention within the art community.
