류지안 작가는 자개를 매개로 자연-인공, 전통-현대 등 대비되는 것들을 공존시키며 새로운 이미지를 제시한다. 그녀의 작품은 수 천 수 만개의 작은 빛이 모여 전체를 이루고 가시화된 영롱함을 드러낸다. 작가는 자연에서 가져온 질료 고유의 속성을 존중하며 이를 부각시키는 일에 집중한다. 작은 조각들이 하나 둘 쌓여 완성해낸 것은 작품에 내재된 시간성과 연결성입니다. 자연 소재가 품고 있는 시간의 흐름, 재료와 소통하며 최적의 길을 찾아가는 과정은 다층적인 시간의 레이어와 함께 응축되어 높은 밀도로 작품 속에 침윤한다.
작품은 겹겹이 쌓아 올린 수천수만 개의 조각과 그것들이 만들어낸 무수한 결들이 파도처럼 흐르고, 부서지고, 빛나고, 다시 모여 흘러가는 자연적 순환의 아름다움이 고스란히 담겨있다. 치열하고 치밀한 반복의 행위와 시간으로 빚은 높은 밀도의 단단한 완성, 그 딱딱함을 깨고 나오는 빛은 한없이 유연하며 끊임없이 반사되고 산란하며 색을 바꿔 일렁인다. 무엇이든 끌어안고 감싸줄 것 같은 둥글둥글하고 열린 항아리를 만지고 쓰다듬으며 반복과 순환의 흐름 속에 일렁이는 고요한 역동적 에너지를 끌어올린다.
한미정상회담에서 조 바이든 미대통령 국빈선물로 전달된 류지안 작가의 ‘The Moon’시리즈 달항아리와 올해 대표 신작들을 프로라타아트 갤러리에서 8월 한 달 동안 전시합니다.

Artist Jian Yoo juxtaposes contrasting elements such as natural-artificial, traditional-modern by using mother-of-pearls as a medium to present new imagery. Her works bring together hundreds and thousands of tiny specks of light, forming a radiant whole that unveils a tangible brilliance. The artist focuses on accentuating the inherent qualities of the materials sourced from nature while respecting their essence. The assembly of small pieces, one by one, culminates in the artwork, embodying its inherent temporality and interconnectedness. The flow of time embedded in natural materials, the process of interacting with the materials around it, creates an optimal path of multiple layers, infusing the artwork with great density.
The artwork encapsulates the beauty of natural cycles, where layers upon layers of thousands and thousands of pieces with their countless interconnections, flow like waves, break, shine, and come together again in a harmonious and captivating rhythm of nature's continuous cycle. The intense and intricate repetition over time results in a solid and dense piece where the light that emerges from this hard structure is infinitely flexible, perpetually reflecting, diffusing, shimmering, and even changing colors. The round and open jar seems to envelop and embrace anything that it caresses, drawing forth a serene and dynamic energy that flows within the rhythm of repetition and cycles.
Jian Yoo’s ‘The Moon’ series, includes the vase presented as an official state gift to President Joe Biden during the recent South Korea-US summit, along with this year’s representative new works, will be exhibited at ProRata Art Gallery for the duration of August.
