김시종

  • 김시종 작가는 현실과 비현실의 경계가 뚜렷하지 않은 세계를 회화적으로 그려내며 자신만의 상상의 세계를 디지털 사진 콜라주 작업을 통해 보여준다. 작가는 디지털 사진이라는 매개체를 이용하여 실험적인 촬영 및 편집 방법으로 사진을 회화적으로 보이게끔 시도한다. 이를 위해 작가는 조명의 활용으로 명암을 최소화 시키고 일렬로 나열하여 촬영하는 대상의 공간감을 없애거나 촬영 후 대상을 변형하며 회화적으로 사진을 만들어간다.
  • 작가의 시리즈는 17세기 네덜란드 정물화에서 영감을 받아 재해석한 작업이다. 당시 정물화에서는 부를 과시하기 위한 사치품들이 소재가 되었고 동시에 청교도의 영향을 받아 죽음을 기억하라는 의미로 해골이나 죽은 생선 등을 함께 등장시켰다. 작가는 부를 과시하는 소비문화와 펜데믹으로 죽음의 그림자가 동시에 존재하는 현실에 대해 네덜란드 정물화가 그려지던 시기가 겹쳐 보였다고 한다 . 작가는 카메라를 들고 실제로 존재할 수 없는 형태의 꽃과 꽃병을 마치 실존하는 것처럼 설치, 촬영하고 나비와 박쥐, 코로나19의 숙주로 알려진 천산갑의 꼬리를 콜라주 하였다. 또한 꽃신으로 한국적인 정취를 더해 주었다. 작가의 작품을 통해 동서양을 넘나드는 정서를 발견할 수 있다.
  • 김시종 작가는 연세대학교 신문방송학을 전공하고 영국 왕립예술 학교(Royal College of Art)에서 석사를 취득했다. 런던에 재학 시 영국 유명 디자이너 폴 스미스(Paul Smith)후원으로 베를린과 파리를 거쳐 영국 소호에서 전시헀다. 폴스미스(런던), DOMOBAAL갤러리(런던), 국립현대미술관 미술은행 등에서 작품을 소장중이다.
  • Artist Kim SiJong creates his own world by blurring the boundaries of reality and unreality through his artistic portrayal of digital photography collages. The artist through the medium of digital photo collages experiments with photography and editing techniques to create images that look very painterly. To achieve this effect the artist plays with lighting to minimize light and shadows, removing the sense of space of the object. After taking the picture, the photograph is then edited and transformed to give a painterly finish.
  • The artist’s series was inspired and reinterpreted by the Dutch still life movement in the 17th century. At the time, luxury items were the subject of still life paintings to show off an individual’s wealth. Skulls and dead fish however also appeared together in still life paintings to remind death under the influence of Puritans during this era. The artist highlights that this period of Dutch life overlapped with the consumerism culture of showing off one’s wealth with the harsh reality that the continent was gripped with the shadows of death from the plague. In the series, the arist holds a camera and installs flowers and vases in forms that cannot actually exist in the real world and takes a photo, collaging/transforming the photograph with the addition of butterflies and bats, a host representing COVID-19. The digital image also adds a Korean atmosphere and influence through the traditional flower shoes. By looking at the artist's work you can find emotions that cross both the East and West.
  • Artist Kim SiJong majored in journalism and broadcasting at Yonsei University and obtained a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art. When the artist was a student in London, he was sponsored by the famous British designer Paul Smith and has had exhibitions in Soho, England, Berlin, and Paris. He currently has works displayed at Paul Smith (London), DOMOBAAL Gallery (London), and the art bank of the Modern and Contemporary Art.
